Tuesday News Roundup

January 30th, 2007 by Jon

In keeping with what will no doubt become a time honored tradition at Howie Dean’s DNC, yet another press release has been issued with “Smooth Talking Mitt” in its sights.  Evidently National Review’s Rich Lowry got his thong in a tightly wound ball because Mitt didn’t give a detailed discourse on Iraq whilst speaking at the National Review

Institute’s Conservative Summit.  Memo to Rich:  Being quoted in a DNC press release is not a badge of honor.  Want to know what Mitt thinks about Iraq?  Check my archives.  Try reading.  Do some research.  Don’t expect every issue to be wrapped up in a nice box for you every time Mitt opens his mouth.  End of Memo.  And, by the way, I can’t quote a DNC press release without mentioning those who refer to Mitt as a “Smooth Talker” are the same part that gave us Slick Willy.

CBS News (yes, CBS has a news division – this might be a shocker to those of you who think CBS only airs CSI) has a friendly fire Op-Ed piece from the Weekly Standard’s Jennifer Rubin.  Its little more than a repackaged barrage aimed to rile up the single issue voters.  Yes, Jennifer, we know Mitt’s public stance on abortion has changed.  So did Ronald Reagan’s.  Maybe he had reasons behind his initial position.  Please go out and find something worth the time it takes me to read.  Thanks.

The Hill’s John Fortier explores the impetus behind the flurry of congressional endorsements Mitt has racked up over the past few weeks.

One of Mitt’s greatest antagonists during his time as governor was the Boston Globe.  Today, Peter Canellos wonders whether or not Mitt’s capitalistic skills can traverse the chasm to political gains.  Well, I wouldn’t be so quick to put much faith in Canellos’ assessment of political skill.  Says Canellos:

The skills that made John Edwards a successful personal injury lawyer also elevated him to political prominence.

During his 2004 presidential campaign, Edwards reached out to voters like an attorney pleading his case to a jury.

Memo to Peter Canellos:  John Edwards’ slick veneer made him so repulsive to voters in his home state of North Carolina that he couldn’t have won a second term if he’d wanted to.  He didn’t even manage to carry his home state in the 2004 election.  Just what level of political prominence are you talking about?

Over the past few days and weeks many bloggers and pundits (I put those in the order of importance) have called upon Mitt to explain his “Mormonism” in a Kennedy-esque (John, not Uncle Ted) fashion.  I suggest they go here first – that’s ABC’s Jim Davenport’s quick and easy reader.  For more detail, go see Nightline’s Terry Moran.  Video can be found here.  Terry’s blog holds more information, including some stuff which otherwise would have ended up on the cutting room floor.  Terry’s final analysis:

Watch for him; he’s a real contender.

We’ve known that for awhile.
