Thursday News Roundup

March 29th, 2007 by Jon

These past few days have been relatively slow Mitt news days.  I hate posting just to fill space, so here’s today’s roundup.

National Review Online’s Kathryn Lopez interviews Blogfather Hugh about his book.  Hugh mentions the upcoming hit job on Mitt’s Bain Capital days.  Figures though – Democrats hate any company that turns a profit.

Mitt heads to Michigan in April.

KSL says Mitt’s support is dropping.  Remember, guys, you’re counting poll numbers for people who aren’t in the race.  What I don’t get is GetReligion’s Daniel Pulliam’s excitement about the supposed drop in Mitt’s numbers.

Mitt heads to Hilton Head, SC.  I hear its nice there this time of year.

The Washington Times’ Suzanne Fields dissects some stereotypes surrounding the presidential contenders.  Everybody has a mold into which the press would like to shove them.  Mitt’s Mormonism is the only one they can find for him.

The American Spectator’s David Hogberg thinks using the word “Epiphany” will bring some new life to the already dead “flip flop” horse.  Sorry, David.  You don’t even rate a “nice try” label.  Do you expect presidential candidates to emerge from the womb with and iron clad policy paper in hand?  Where is your condemnation of Hillary for her shift from being a College Republican president to a radical leftist?  Better luck next time.

Howlin’ Mad Howie Deans Head Mitt Hitt Man Damien LaVera decries Mitt’s use of capitalism to recruit college kids to his campaign.  Its call an “incentive”, Damien.  It causes workers to be more productive.  Did they not require Econ 101 at your college?  Guess not.

Blogfather Hugh comments on Mitt’s fundraising.  Synopsis:  Campaigns run on money.  Mitt raises money better than any of his opponents and that edge will soon make a difference.

And finally, the American Thinker’s J. Peter Mulhern offers some unsolicited advice to Mitt.  He wants Mitt to focus on winning the number two slot behind whoever actually gets the nomination.  Americans want authenticity, says Mulbern.  They want someone who would be “hard-nosed and confrontational with all our enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Memo to J. Peter Mulhern:  The purpose of a primary is to let the party decide who will bear its standard in the general election.  I believe John Adams once referred to the office of Vice-President as a “bucket of warm spit.”  While it may be the best stepping stone to the Oval Office, its far too early for anyone to set their sights on the VP slot – least of all Mitt.  I believe it’s safe to say your unsolicited advice was appropriately filed in a circular cabinet.

And finally, today over at Article VI, John poses questions which, if the current Mormon Inquest continues, should be posed – repeatedly – to every single candidate for president.  Hillary and Obama better sharpen their pencils.

Monday News Roundup

March 26th, 2007 by Jon

We’ll start today with RedState’s Erick Erickson, writing in Human Events, where he reviews Blogfather Hugh’s book.  The review is decent, except for the final paragraph where Erickson writes:

Those quotes draw me back to one of the strengths Hugh cites – the great horde of Mormon missionaries who will help Mitt in the Iowa caucus, the very first state on the road to the White House. I wonder why it is that Romney can take such a great advantage of these young people, but evangelicals and others should not even consider it.

He then goes on to chide Blogfather Hugh about not addressing the aforementioned issue.  Well, Erick, I’ll tell you why Blogfather Hugh didn’t address it in his book.  There will be no “great horde of Mormon missionaries” helping Mitt in Iowa.  That is not their purpose.  You can bet your bottom dollar you won’t see any young people with missionary name tags walking precincts.  If you’d done your research you’d know that.

The American Spectator’s Prowler connects the dots between Mitt and the Evangelicals for Mitt blog.  Their dots consist of Mitt’s office providing “opposition research” and steering donors to the site.  No direct payments from Mitt to that blog have been made.  This is just another attempt to prop up the New York Times Kirkpatrick rumor that Mitt gets his support by using his checkbook.  Nice try Prowler.  Swing and a miss.

The Prowler also mentions the Thompson factor – polling data can be found at the New York Sun.  Don’t get me wrong.  I like Fred Thompson – a lot.  I believe he personifies his own political philosophy through his Arthur Branch character on Law & Order.  The fact of the matter is, Fred isn’t running.  Mitt is.  If that changes, I’ll explore it further.  Till then, there’s nothing to discuss.

The Salt Lake Trib’s Thomas Burr takes a look at the campaign and the various heath issues affecting the candidates and their spouses.

The Boston Herald’s Jessica Heslam takes a look at Mitt’s online outreach, specifically highlighting his Myspace.com page.  Jessica, there is something to be said for having a “predictably scandal-free” website.

Congressman Mike Conaway tells his constituency why he’s backing Mitt.

The AP has the very latest on a very important issue involving Mitt.  Good to know they’re focused on the vital points of the campaign.

Friday News Roundup

March 23rd, 2007 by Jon

The Detroit News’ Mike Glover writes about Mitt’s efforts to distance himself from the do-nothing whacked out sorry excuse for Salt Lake City’s Mayor Ross “Rocky” Anderson.  I’m not sure there’s enough real estate in the nation to get far enough away from the Salt Lake City Laughing Stock.  Anderson made his most recent attempt at the limelight by making a shrill, cracked voice call for the impeachment of the President.  Anderson is an embarrassment to Salt Lake City and the state of Utah.  Memo to Ross Anderson:  Your 15 minutes are long since up.  End of memo.

The De Moines Register’s Maggie O’Brien details Mitt’s comments on immigration and letting foreign students stay in the country after having finished their education.  Best quote from the article:

Our immigration laws are upside down.  It makes no sense at all that we have concrete borders with people who have skills and education, but we’re wide open to people who have neither.

Makes sense to me.

The Salt Lake Tribune’s Peggy Fletcher Stack interviews Blogfather Hugh as a part of his voice destroying book tour.  The interview is fairly mundane, with the possible exception of former Clinton Spinmeister Mike McCurry’s comment that Mormons are often mischaracterized as

snake-eating, serpent-dwelling people.  But, you know, that gets overridden by so many role models that exist.  People who know Mormons, people who live in Mormon families. They know what their ethic is.

Snake eating serpent-dwelling?  Mike, c’mon.  Where are you getting this stuff?  Good to know you’ve learned better – I think.

Thursday News Roundup

March 22nd, 2007 by Jon

There just wasn’t much worth posting about yesterday.

Some in the MSM are surprised at the incentives Mitt is offering to those willing to work for his campaign.  Via MyManMitt comes this information.  If you bring in cash to Mitt’s coffers, he gives you a 10% commission.  This will no doubt raise some liberal eyebrows.  That’s to be expected.  They don’t understand capitalism.

Forbes’ Evelyn Rusli quotes Mitt on the American Dream.  Short and to the point.

Journal Chrétien’s Chad Groening finds a few former Democratic operatives who think Mitt’s religion is hurting his campaign.  Gee, Chad, what exactly were you expecting them to say?

The Baltimore Sun’s Bruce Wilson hops on the bandwagon of those who want Mitt to hold the equivalent of a Friday night Fireside to “openly discuss” his religion – one Wilson, Mitt, and I happen to share.  Memo to Bruce:  This is a political race, not a theological one.  JFK did little more than persuade people he wouldn’t be a pawn to Rome – he didn’t open himself up to a debate on the theological stance of the Catholic Church.  In many ways Mitt has already followed the trail blazed by Kennedy.  You may have already gotten all you’re going to get.

Howlin’ Mad Howie Dean’s Mitt Hit Man Damien LaVera has quoted himself yet again. He says “Smooth Talking” Mitt isn’t ready for Prime Time.  Memo to Damien:  Oh reaaallly?  Is that why you’re wasting so much time, effort, energy and money taking shots at him?  Methinks thou dost presume thyself far too smart.  How many times a day do you Google yourself, Damien?  Do you ever quote anyone but yourself?

Further proof that you can’t please everyone all the time.

Tuesday News Roundup

March 20th, 2007 by Jon

Some people are just overly sensitive.  They lie in wait, itching to be offended – or even better yet waiting for some whining special interest group or person to be offended.  The Boston Herald’s Dave Wedge managed to find a few people in South Florida who took offense at Mitt’s use of Spanish phrase much beloved to Cuba’s dictator in chief Fidel Castro.  You’ll note the Herald’s creative use of Photoshop.  Makes one wonder about the howls of protest which would be heard if anything similar were ever done to a liberal democrat’s picture.  Mitt’s even getting “friendly” fire from Firecracker Michelle Malkin who has declared “the Romney Campaign: Not yet ready for primo tiempo”.

Memo to Michelle:  If you’re going to take a shot at a candidate in a language which he attempted to use and you have not, at least make sure your syntax is correct before you press the publish button.  No, I’m not going to tell you where your error is.  You figure it out.  End of memo.

Capitol Weekly’s Anthony York attempts to make a big deal about the non-meeting of the Governator and Mitt last week.  Anthony, it’s a long campaign cycle.  California’s 52 electoral votes guarantee Mitt will re-visit the state many times before the primary.  Get over it.

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch has endorsed Mitt.  Important endorsement, but no surprises here.

Howlin’ Mad Howie Dean and Mitt will be in Omaha next month.  I wonder who will be remembered best.

Dave Wedge is listed as the Chief Enterprise Editor for the Boston Herald.  His chronicle of Mitt’s St. Patrick’s day visit with Don Imus proves that even editors need editors.  His first paragraph is completely nonsensical and makes the reader think Imus asked Mitt to jump off McCain’s bandwagon.  That and Wedge’s “Top o’ the Mormon” jab just shows Wedge is anything but serious.  Perhaps we should ask him if he was drinking while writing.  Wouldn’t be the first time for a Boston journalist.

When I came across a reference to this Slate piece from the boys at Article VI, I had but one conclusion.  The author must be female.  Why did I come to this conclusion? (and by the way I was correct in my assumption) Because no self-respecting guy would ever have the audacity to question another guy about what he does with his underwear.  That is an unspoken yet universally understood tenet of guydom – Mormon or otherwise.  Guys don’t ask because guys really don’t want to know.  Kind of makes me wonder if there are any real guys over at Slate.  Perhaps Michelle Tsai would care to regale us with her “unmentionable” habits.  Care to elaborate, Michelle?

Saturday News Roundup

March 17th, 2007 by Jon

The New Hampshire News Leader publishes Michael Moffett’s reasons why he jumped from McCain’s side to Mitt’s.

The AP’s Glen Johnson says Mitt is “scrambling” for cash.  Now there’s a surprise.  Elections are won and lost with money, Glen.  And, by the way, I wouldn’t call raising close to $8 million in less than three months a “scramble”.  Nice try.

CBN’s David Brody comments on Mitt’s nailing down of the “Mr. Nice Guy” title.  Nice guys do finish first every now and then.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Carla Marinucci reports on Mitt’s plan to “register” the some 12 million illegal immigrants.  No doubt some civil liberties immigrant “rights” whiners will begin to bunch their undies.  Think about this for a second – how many ways are you registered with the Federal, State, and Local government?  If this is required as a citizen, shouldn’t it be required of those living among us?  And just to further annoy the far-right on the issue of immigration, no it isn’t feasible to just deport 12 million people.  That’s reality.  Try living there sometime.

Article VI Blog’s very own Lowell Brown reviews Blogfather Hugh’s book for Meridian Magazine.  Not bad for a lawyer. (kidding, Lowell, kidding!)

Some guy at Kos says the sky is falling.  He wants Mitt to stop it.  Someone should tell him Mitt doesn’t own Bain Capital anymore.  Yeah, he might get invited to the company picnic every few years, but he’s long since moved on.  If Daulton doesn’t want another “bile and insult” radio station in Columbus, there’s a simple way to do that.  Don’ listen to it.  No listeners = no ratings = no station.  Oh, wait, I forgot most of the Kossaks don’t understand basic economics.

And finally today, sometimes it really pays to research the subject on which you report.  Somebody please forward this memo to the Washington Blade’s Elizabeth Perry.  If you’ve never heard of the Washington Blade, you’re not alone.  Evidently its DC’s gay lifestyle newspaper.  Perry wrote a piece on Mitt where she detailed his proposed policies on homosexual issues and she also went to some effort to quote LDS Church sources – including one from Church Headquarters in Salt Lake City.  She also quoted one David Melson, a former member who now heads up a Gay advocacy group in DC.  Melson’s LDS Church bona fides include these details:

He was 25 when he went to serve a mission in China and the Philippines for two years. From his return in 1982 until his unofficial departure from the Mormon Church in June 2006, he held several leadership positions in the church, including ordained high priest and a Relief Society president.

Memo to Elizabeth Perry:  You got played.  Men in LDS Church leadership can and do hold many different positions.  Relief Society President isn’t one of them.  The LDS Church Relief Society is the largest women’s organization in the world – run by and for women.  No charge for that information.

Thursday News Roundup

March 15th, 2007 by Jon

The New York Times’ Pam Belluck writes about Mitt’s economic record.  She cites the numbers for the first three paragraphs and then is quick to quote incoming Governor Patrick’s $1.3 billion budget hole.  Memo to Pam:  Patrick dug that hole himself.  You might want to mention that.

LA Business Journal’s Howard Fine details the LA side of the Mitt campaign. (free subscription required)

The State Journal’s Juliet Terry interviews Mitt on some issues specific to West Virginia.  He emphasizes clean coal technology as a way for the US to become energy independent.  Just so you know, the US is the Saudi Arabia of coal.  Find a way to replace oil with clean coal technology and the Mullahs will have to find something else to sell.  Sand maybe.

The Hartford Courant’s Mark Silk fancies himself a religious scholar, but shows his utter ignorance about Mormons.  Simply put, Mark, neither you nor “Evangelical Poohbah” Chuck Colson are qualified to stand as sentries at the gates of Christendom and decide who is and is not a Christian.  This isn’t a race for Pastor.  This is a race for President.  Any religious debate is one you will quickly lose.

The Conservative Voice’s Dr. Douglas Schell has an interesting conversation on Mormon doctrine as it relates to the United States Constitution.  He’s promised to keep the discussion and dialogue “respectful”.  It might be worth bookmarking.

WBZTV’s Jon Keller has some new polling data that might surprise some.  I’m not holding my breath waiting for the MSM to trumpet the data.

On a personal note, I’d like to throw the Yellow Flag for Cheap Shotting on the Nation’s Nicholas Van Hoffman.  He called out Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ Chief of Staff D. Kyle Sampson.  Sampson evidently overstepped his authority by canning the eight US Attorneys without getting approval from the proper Gonzales.  Sampson himself was canned as a result.  Not content with simply reporting the facts, Hoffman had to put in the obligatory cheap shot:

Hence it fell to Kyle Sampson to get rid of the federal prosecutors without bothering the boss. Kyle was the right person to do it. He’s a Mormon, a Brigham Young University graduate. You can depend on them. (emphasis added)Maybe I should put in a resume to Gonzales.  I’m a Mormon, and a Brigham Young University graduate.  Am I the right person?

I guess if you’re looking for a religious bigot with bad punctuation skills and a visceral desire to throw cowardly cheap shots at people who hold jobs he only dreams of, you need not look further than Nicholas Van Hoffman.  He’s a hard left bigot.  You can depend on him.

Memo to Nick:  Cheap shots do not Pulitzers earn.   Get used to disappointment.

Wednesday News Roundup

March 14th, 2007 by Jon

MLive.com’s Jim Kuhnhenn notes with interest the presidential candidate’s spending plans.  2008 could be the first $2 billion race.

NewWest Politics has two entries in today’s roundup.  First J. Gelband writes about Mitt’s fundraising visit to Boise. Not content with just reporting the news,       Jill Kuraitis has some behind the scenes details about things that didn’t go so well during Mitt’s Boise visit.  Had she not somehow managed to insert a reference to The Manchurian Candidate, her work might even pass as mediocre.  Memo to Jill:  If you spend any time following one specific candidate, you’ll find his stump speech to be pretty much the same with minor modifications for the specific audience.  This isn’t a new trend.  If you want variety on the stump, try a salad bar.

The Boston Herald’s Virginia Buckingham doesn’t like Mitt’s stance on immigration.  She blames Mitt for a roundup of illegal immigrants at a New Bedford factory even though – and I’m sure this comes as a shock to Ms. Buckingham – Mitt is no longer governor of Massachusetts.  Maybe she’s heard of Governor Deval Patrick.

Speaking of immigration, Mitt tells Arizona it would be a good idea if State Troopers were trained to deal with illegal immigrants.

Mitt picked up the endorsement of Rhode Island’s governor.

And finally, somebody has found a way for the former Air America Princess-In-Her-Own-Mind Janeane Garofalo.  Newsbusters’ Tim Graham details her latest tirade printed in the giveaway DC tabloid Express.  For those of you unfamiliar with Express it’s a free paper known for littering the DC area during the morning rush hour.  More people accidentally read her comments on Mitt than ever were exposed to her tyrannical Air America talk show.

Tuesday News Roundup

March 13th, 2007 by Jon

Hotline reports GOP money man Ted Welch has thrown his support behind Mitt.  Hotline seems to think Welch would chair a Fred Thompson campaign.  Theoretical analysis is everywhere these days.

Mitt was interviewed on Hannity & Colmes last night.  Fox has a partial transcript.  RealClearPolitics has the whole thing.

Ellen of NewsHounds also covers Blogfather Hugh’s appearance on Hannity & Colmes – quite poorly if I may be so bold.  Memo to Ellen:  Liberals want to bleed Mitt any which way they can.  Religion just so happens to be one of their preferred method as they can’t touch flip flopping without confronting John Kerry’s lurching ghost of campaigns past.  Just because you don’t see it that way doesn’t make it untrue.

Huntington News’ David Kinchen reviews Blogfather Hugh’s book.  Actually a pretty good and level review.

Tufts Observer’s Duncan Pickard, a freshman with an “undeclared” major, wants Mitt to give a speech written by Pickard.  Memo to Duncan:  Perhaps you should get around to choosing a major before writing hollowly emotional speech filled with empty ad-hominem attacks couched in cheap rhetoric.  Better luck next time.

McCall’s Daniel Sheehan discovers Mitt’s a Mormon.  I just don’t get why he thinks this is such a revelation to anyone who can read.

Monday News Roundup

March 12th, 2007 by Jon

Blogfather Hugh’s book hits the stands today.  Go. Buy. Read. Tell your friends.  When I get my copy, you’ll get my review.  Till then, visit the Article VI Boys.

Mitt has stirred up an ancient Mormon controversy.  I read it whilst drinking a Diet Mountain Dew.  That should give you my take on the controversy.

Happy Birthday Mitt.  The AP’s Glen Johnson finds controversy even in the age of the candidates.

The St. Petersburg Times’ Adam Smith chronicles Mitt’s comments on the Terri Schiavo issue.  Smith should understand that not all conservatives agreed with the actions taken to intercede in her case.  What I can say is that she need not have died the way she did.  End of memo.

The New York Times’ David Kirkpatrick is bound and determined to make something out of Mitt’s donations of his own money to “conservative” groups in order to buy their allegiance and support.  Blogfather Hugh – a recipient of Kirkpatrick’s accusations – comments on the issue here.  I’ll agree with Hugh on the fact that the total amount – 150 Large given out in 10, 15, and 25 Large increments, isn’t exactly buying much.  Kirkpatrick’s agenda driven article doesn’t hold water.  That said, I’m still waiting for my cut of the windfall.

The Yorktown Patriot’s Richard Bishirijan looks at Kirkpatrick’s work and comes up with this summation:

Romney is just another ambitious man with a good looking wife, lots of money, and the time and desire to play politics.

You takes the compliments you gets.

The Los Angeles Times’ Janet Hook takes a surprising look at Mitt and the abortion issue.  History is always a good teacher.  The MSM and the Pro-abortion crowd only believe conversion on this issue can happen one way.  Going from pro-choice to pro-life is unforgivable in their eyes.

Howlin’ Mad Howie Dean’s Mitt Hit Man Damien LaVera again puts his name in print.  This guy must Google himself at least 15 times a day.  Damien, don’t you ever get tired of that out of tune, one note Samba?

Opps.  Mitt loses track of his Hollises.  If I did that much traveling, I’d lose track of my time zones.
